Did you know that 200 people die in the US every year from carbon monoxide poisoning? Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that is often emitted in the exhaust of cars, burning charcoal, and things that run on natural gas. Carbon monoxide info. (http://www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PUBS/466.html)
Using a carbon monoxide detector, much like a fire alarm, can prevent poisoning and death. You can get them at most hardware stores.
Have you tested your smoke alarms lately? I don't mean pressing the button either. Once a month you should light a match/lighter (or you can just burn something in the kitchen like me :para) and hold it under the alarm. Sometimes the sensors can get clogged with dust and pressing the button to make sure the batteries are working won't cut it.
Kid's fire safety site. (http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/kids/flash.shtm) This site is geared towards children and fire safety. They also go over making a fire escape plan (http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/Fire/Educational/escape-plan.php).
