View Full Version : Rant about head of PT/OT

We had our eval today with the autism clinic. (see other thread) They suggested we increase therapy. She said with Garrett being 6 months behind, he needs more therapy then 1 time a month. (The therapist recently decided this was all he needed) She also said he needs PT for how often he falls, cant climb steps, ect.

She wrote me out scripts for PT/OT for weekly therapy. I took them in to the director of early intervention, who oversees the PT/OT program. She more or less acted like she did not belive me. She questioned whose handwriteing was on the scripts. She told me she has to trust her profesionalls, and if they say monthly is good, then that is what she is going to go by. I am so pissed. This is a freaking Dr who reccommended this, not me. A Dr. who is nationally known.

Chad wants me to look into private therapy for them. I have no idea where to start at though. I was SO mad when I left there. :bitch

:pissed What a biotch! If I were you, I would look into other options, but that's probably going to be a terrible pain in the arse. Can you have your doctor call them? She shouldn't be questioning you, but at least it would be proof so that you can get what you need for your kiddo.

:mad Will private therapy be expensive? Could the Dr. recommend somewhere to go/names of therapists?

We have insurance that would cover it, and we also have BCMH which will pick up what is not covered. I am going to look into Childrens hospitals therapy. That is where this Dr. is through.

That is great (insurance.) The hospital may have a better working relationship with the Dr. :yep

:( Moonie. That is awful. I also think you should just go to the hospital. They will have a great relationship with the Drs.

I see you wrote that in April and its prob sorted by now. Hope it is and all is working out well.

Um, is it possible to go over her head? I know she's the head but she must report to someone. I'd say she was disregarding the recommendations of doctors and that it is detrimental to the child. Threaten to sue. Her therapists don't have time, they've already been hassling you about that, their recommendation is based on how busy their schedules are and not on the needs of the child.

Ok here's what you should do: First, go back to this freakin' woman, inform her that her therapists are not basing their recommendation of frequency of therapy on what is best for Garrett, but on how often they can be bothered to see him. Tell her that if she plans to completely disregard the recommendations of nationally-renowned physicians, then you'd like to know whose recommendation you need to override her clearly incompetent therapists - God's? Tell her that if she cannot give Garrett the amount of therapy that he needs BASED ON A DOCTOR'S RECOMMENDATION, then you will have no choice but to force her to do so via the courts. Ask her to whom she reports and say you'd like to speak to them about her incompetency. Be all imperious and do NOT let her talk down to you. You probably know more about autism at this point than she does. Tell her if her company will not provide him the therapy that a doctor says he needs, then they can pay for a private therapist to do so. Tell her you'll be contacting the media.

Then go back to the autism specialist doctor and tell her that the therapy company refused to accede to her recommendations and threw out her prescriptions. Ask what you should do to go around this. She'll probably know some private therapists if nothing else.

Google the therapy company and find out who their CEO is. Call them. Call everyone who actually runs the company and tell them that their company refused to provide the services recommended by a doctor and that you plan to go to the evening news about it. Then follow through - call the evening news. Cry on camera. Make sure they get a shot of Garrett, and you saying how your poor son is being caused further developmental delays because the therapy company THREW OUT a prescription from a nationally renowned autism specialist. The news people will lap it up, they'll definitely air it. And it'll put further pressure on that company.

Fight, babe, you can get the services he needs if you pitch a big enough fit. :hugs

Iggy said it great. I know with our Early Steps, there are people in corporate you can contact. Also we have patient advocates too that will help fight for your services. I had to switch FSC's because she didn't think we needed any additional service :roll Once we got a new one, she got us all the service they needed. Let the doctor know too what this lady did. Let us know what you find out.

Ooh, I want me a Megan when I run into issues.
Good on ya, Megan, that's excellent advice.
Best of luck, Moonie; I'll be thinking of you and Gorgeous Garrett!

:blueheart Thank you ladies. We are in the process of pursuing private therapy for the boys. I am tired of messing with EI. As soon as we get private therapy going, I have a long letter drafted about how things are handled. It will be mailed off to as many people as I can find addys for.

Make sure you cc your state rep and congressperson for your area. Actually, I would cc the people on the education board and the reps and congress people who are involved with making the laws (education commitee or whatever it is called).
