Mingle Bells

On February 1st, in the morning, I had another ultrasound. Steve was able to come up with me, and everything was fine. I went back to my room, and he went back to work. I was reading in bed, and rolled over. I felt a sudden rush of fluid come out. I thought oh no, my water just broke. I was 1 day away from being 30 weeks, so I was pretty scared. I put my hand down there, and saw it was blood. I pushed my nurse button, and she came right in. Before I knew what was happening, there were all kinds of doctors and nurses. I was concerned because Steve was due to come up for lunch any minute. I kept saying, don't let him in here with this blood everywhere. They were able to warn him as he came down the hall.
They moved me back to labor and delivery. Dr. Balintona kept an eye on the babies' heart rates, and finally came in to say we needed to deliver fast. One of their heart rates was becomming unstable. So, he took me back for an emergency C section. I was put under general anesthesia, so Steve couldn't come in. Luckily, he had called my Mom, so she was there. They waited while the team delivered my 10 week early babies. I remember right before they put me under, I said, "Please God let my boys be OK."
When I woke up, I was in a recovery room, with Steve, my Mom, and his Mom. I was in a lot of pain. The transport team brought the boys in. They were in a portable incubator. They were on their way to Saint Marys, where the NICU was. I got to touch their little tiny feet, and that was it. Off they went.
The next evening, I was able to take an ambulance to Saint Marys to see them. What a scary sight. Jacob was 3lbs, 4oz. Joshua was 3lbs, 5oz. Pretty good weights for 30 weekers, I was told. They were both intubated, and hooked up to all kinds of monitors. They both got ultrasounds of their brains right away. They both had an area of concern. That seemed to clear up at their next scan a few days later. More on that later on. I ache all over just thinking about it now. My poor babies, how would they ever get through all of this?
Well, they did! They spent 5 weeks in the NICU.
