View Full Version : boosters with 5pt harness
not to beat a dead horse, but...
Could I get a high back booster with a 5pt harness for EJ? Bottom line is.... I hate how big their car seats are (we have the Britax Blvd) now that they are getting bigger. I would like to be able to use one of their seats for Ellie (she's out growing her infant carrier) because they are so safe. And I saw that they have boosters with harnesses now... which I know he still needs to be in. And the weight range is from like 20ish lbs to 100 ~ which obviously applies... it's the term "booster" that is throwing me off :para But it sounds like based on the laws and seat requirements he would be ok :shrug

I'm not sure...but I've been wondering the same thing. My Brandon is a big boy 37ish pounds...and I know he'd have so much more room in a booster.
But most of the boosters (the ones with the backs, that can be later taken off) I've seen have had a height requirement of around 40"...Brandon is prolly only about 38" or so...Taryn is only about 36 1/2" :sigh So I think for us, we are gonna have to wait awhile....
well, like I was in Sams Club and saw this one http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=375031&pCatg=8613
it goes from 34" - 52"
:hmm I think my ideal thing right now would be a highback booster (with harness) that I can eventually take the back off of when he's older...

I never had one that the back came off? :think Is that a new thing? We called them boosters, even though they were a seat complete with backs, because you used the regular seat belts/shoulder harness instead of the seat itself having straps.
It boosted them up so that the standard shoulder/car seat belts fit them properly. I actually still have one we keep in the car for car pooling younger siblings.
tis why I'm so confused :rofl things have changed :lol
they do have boosters with harness :yep that's why I'm thinking it would be ok... but it's also what is confusing me - because I think booster = car seat belt :lol
here's an example http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3009610

I'd never seen a 5pt that converts to a backless. I'm glad they came up with that. Sean is in a backless, but he's probably big enough to get out. I need to weigh him, really. Alex and McKenzie are in the convertible to backless seat belt type boosters. Savannah's in a 5 pt convertible seat, but it doesn't do much good because she can get out of it. :gaah
Anyway, I think that one you posted that is a 5 pt that converts is a great idea and would probably be great in your situation!

The Nautilus sam- that's what we are getting- last car seat they will need. It harnesses to 65 lbs, then can be used as a booster to 100 lbs, and the back comes off :yep
But it's cheaper at Wal-Mart

:gaah I swear they were $127 only yesterday! :gaah But still, cheaper :lol
I've heard nothing but RAVE reviews of them! :yep
I saw they were $137 :lol

They might be less in the store, you never know.
I've been thinking about this too. My boys are getting very tall - they're both 42" tall now - but they're only maybe 35lbs. I need to look up the state carseat laws and see what the deal is. They're getting too tall for their current carseats.

I have 5 point harness boosters with backs that convert to just boosters for the twins. And for the life of me I can't remember the name of them. Let me go look and then I'll come back and tell you.

Yeah they are expensive but atleast I'll never have to buy any other kind of carseat for them. Caden is chunky so I needed something that would harness a higher weight and those aren't very easy to find. I got them at Pippin McGee's and they gave me a twin discount. :woot

I have the twins in the backless boosters. the one like Sofa said. Matthew is tall and weighs 46lbs, James is a little smaller. If I could have found the ones that the backs came off I would've gotten those! They look really comfortable for the kids!

Graco makes a seat now (the name is escaping me) that goes from infant to backless booster. Up to 100 lbs I think. We have talked about going with the high back booster after their 3rd birthday but haven't made any definite decsions yet.

Hey here's a folding booster, but it's not harness style:

Interesting.
They have to be in a carseat or booster until they're 8 in Virginia? :thud Wow.

They turn 4 in September. I guess if they weigh 40lbs by then (probably not) then we can think about going to boosters.

My boys are in regular boosters...Some of their friends are in the high back 5 pt harness "booster" seats.
Iggy....not sure when that website was posted but some of the states are wrong. NH is age 8...there is a weight and height requirement but I am blanking on it now.
My guys went to regular booster a 4 because they were too squished in the car seats...but they are tall for their age

This is so confusing! I wonder how many times the law will change by the time my boys need a booster!!! :shock

This is the one we're going to put our twins in soon too. :yep It will be the last seat they'll need. We've checked them out and LOVE them! We actually bought one for Sammy, but had to take it back at the time because it didn't fit with our 3 seats across... but now Jonah is in the 3rd row, so we'll be buying these for the twins soon. Anyway, Sammy loved it - very comfortable and very sturdy! :yep

I thought they had made 8 the law here but apparently it's still just 5 and they strongly suggest keeping them in boosters until 8. I have no problem keeping mine in some sort of booster until the seat belt fits properly. I'm tired of bulky convertibles but the boosters don't take up as much room.

Yes, you can. You do have to be careful though because lots of them that say 3 in 1 that go up to 100lbs have very low top harness slots, which means they outgrow the harness before they are ready for a booster, usually around age 2 or 2.5yrs. The 2 exceptions to this are the graco nautilus and the britax frontier. Either of those would work fine for what you need. They both have nice high top slots (around 18 inches as opposed to some of the 3 in 1's which only have 14 inch top slots!) and harness to around 65lbs.

Most kids aren't ready for a booster physically and mentally until they are 5 or 6. While most laws say 4 and 40lbs that is a bare minimum and the longer they are harnessed the safer they are. They need to be able to sit properly under the seatbelt and understand that they can't take their arm out of the shoulder portion, and it needs to fit them correctly. Lap belt over the hips and not across the belly, and shoulder belt across their shoulder and not cutting into their neck. For most kids this is 5 or 6 yrs old before they meet the criteria. Many laws are changing in most states because car crashes are the #1 cause of death among children and 80-95% of children are not properly restrained in cars. Shocking! A lot of harnessed seats only go to 40lbs but the current trend is higher weight harnessed seats and pretty soon you wont see seats that only go to 40lbs because people are realizing it isn't enough.
