I just talked to my SIL. The campground will be done by next summer and has 30 sites. Tent sites will be $15/night. There are also sites with electric hookups for RVs. There is drinking water and private shower rooms. There will also be a camp store, which may not be entirely finished depending on when we go. There is not swimming directly connected to the campground, but there are many many many lakes in the area for swimming, fishing, boating, etc. There is a ton of hiking in them thar parts as well.

For those of you who don't camp, there are options.

Here's a link for some beautiful rental cabins.
http://www.highpointvillage.com/

Also, my SIL's parents rent a cabin that has all the amenities of a house. :lol It has two bedrooms w/ full size beds, one with a queen and a queen pull-out couch. It's $110/night for four people and they charge extra per person after that, but it's not too much. I'm not sure how that applies to kids, but we can look into it.

Like Kebs said, I wouldn't recommend going until at least mid June, but in my opinion fall would be the best time to go. July/August can be a bit hot and muggy and buggy.

I love cabins.

I don't do tents, and I don't know anyone with an RV, so I'd probably request to stay in a cabin.

I'm all for camping. We usually go Mid June, but have gone later. Lately the summers here haven't been bad at all.

I am not bringing the kids and DH. If I went, I would just drive.

How humid is it in the summer?

They have bathrooms :yep in the cabins. That was a big thing for me. You should go, Zak.

Honestly, if I'm going to spend $500+ on a vacation, I don't want to go camping. Would you want to spend $500+ to camp ($1500+ with kids)?:para I live in Oregon. I can drive 30 minutes and camp, and it will most likely be in an actual forest.

Any way, we can chose a different place/thing to do next summer? Maybe another poll? I really don't think I will go if it's camping in WI (especially if it's a family thing).:(

what else can we do ring? what do you want to do? i :heart camping, so i'm cool with it, but it's whatever for me, as long as i can afford it, which i'm not even sure of yet...as long as i can bring my girlies.

Smidget

and preferably DH too...(no i didn't forget about you babe)

I like the LV idea, too, but I wouldn't want to bring the boys then, KWIM? We could go to the Dells :) It has the camping for people who want to camp, and the resorts, attractions for those who don't (and cheap crappy hotels/motels that would work just fine if you don't want to pay a lot).

I hate camping and if it is going to be that expensive, I am out of it.

Why would it cost so much? For the plane tickets? You could drive in two days tops and gas would probably be about $200-300. And I lived in OR and I can assure you that this is "actual forest." :lol

The cabins are very nice (I wouldn't have posted them otherwise). They are more "luxury cabins" (they call them chalets) than your idea of some rustic hole-in-the-wall. They have bathrooms and kitchens and everything you could want at home. Lyle and Kathy (the owners) are two of the nicest people in the world and live in the main lodge. Everything is very beautiful and impeccably kept.

I also want to add that it is 3 hours from the airports in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Green Bay, and Duluth.

I guess maybe I would like to go somewhere that is more "touristy". There are so many place I want to see, but I'm not really going to take vacations very often being a single mom. My main purpose for going, is to meet and spend time with all of you. Honestly, I will go where ever people decide we are going, because meeting all of you is worth anything. I would still like to try to meet all of you and visit a really cool place at the same time...like a lot of people just went to New York. Now come on...that place is fuckin cool! I don't think I will be taking another vacation for a long time, so I need to get the most I can out of it.:lol

If we are going to go camping, I want to camp at Yellowstone or Mt. Rushmore(isn't that fairly central?). Some really cool place that I can somewhat justify spending $500 on camping.

Oh and I can't spend 2 days driving there and 2 days driving back if I can only afford to take 4 days off of work. I'm most likely going to fly to where ever we go so I can take the fewest days off of work.

Wouldn't it have been great if we could all have gone to NY? :sigh

I understand where you are coming from. I admit that my motivation for going to WI is partially selfish because I'd be able to see my family as well and we can only really afford one big trip a year. But also, it's a really beautiful area, extremely peaceful and invoking of communion with friends and family. It's also the highest point in WI. :para :lol

Otherwise as far as centrally located goes there's the Badlands (which kickass), the Dells, the Apostle Islands (or just about anywhere on Lake Superior), Glacier National Park (not that central but unfrigginbelievable), Shitgo (I mean Chicago), and a bunch of other places.

There's always Vegas, baby. :thumbsup

I'm up for either. If it's camping, I'm definitely going to bring Alex, and I'll see what "stage" the twins are at that point. I looked into renting a camper, which is about 300 bucks and sleeps six- but the cabins look good, too!

Vegas would be fun, too - I've always liked that trip, but I wouldn't bring my kids. Yeah- they made it more geared towards families, and Circus Circus has this great indoor amusement park, but I wouldn't wan to spend my weekend trying to convince Alex that all the round rides are broken, just so I don't have to go on them!

Either way would be fun. Camping would be more hang out and do woodsie stuff (I want to make REAL s'mores, not the "microwave a marshmallow" kind that I make for the brownie troop.) I'll bring bug-spray and bear-away- it'd be a blast! Vegas is Vegas! It's a good time- but it's also good for breaking into smaller groups and hanging out in casinos/seeing shows. Either way- meeting up with everyone is the cool part.

We use to camp a lot before we had kids. I think we would end up being cabin people too :lol I'm up for anything where I can bring the kids.

Im' up for anything, but would prefer something that DH and the kids could come, too. I've taken a lot of vacations without them.

I'm all for camping in the Black Hills :yep

OK Smidge and Zak I want a cabin and I would love to share as it will save $$$. I will take DH as he loves fishing and would love to go just for that. Smidge I was serious about picking you up, or if you are taking DH then we can drive up together or DH can also take his pick up truck and we could put the gear int here. and we can have my DH and yours drive together and try to communicate :lol my DH doesn't speak english but he listens to hip/hop and rap so i think they will get along.

I'm in for anything. If we go camping we can go streaking :para, right? We can have sooo much fun with some truth or dare, too, maybe :para I think if we can get a cool group rate to stay in the cabins and we were all in one place, it would be kickass!!
Wendy, my DH loves to fish, too, so maybe I can talk him into going if he has a fishing partner!
Whatever you guys choose is fine with me! My DH owes me!! :whip

My husband speaks Spanish, so if I can convince him to come your husband could talk to him, Wendy. :)

Smidget
10-12-2006, 04:16 PM
i can speak some spanish. i could make myself look like an ass, but at least your DH would have someone to talk to, wendy. hehe. yeah, i was serious about driving up with you, too. my DH said he wants to take his bike if there's a place for him to ride up there, so whoever lives up there, is there? then it would work well if your DH took his truck, and we could all drive up together. we'll help with gas, of course! and cabin, tent, makes no difference to me!

WendyDixie
10-12-2006, 04:27 PM
Yeah I would defanetly do the cabin especially since I don't think my oldest wood do good w/out a private place to go to and no AC... :lol I know we are spoiled. Defanetley if he takes the truck then there should be enough space for the bike too, it's a dodge ram 1500 so that should be fine... I really hope this works out....

Good for the Spanish speaking people but if it has to do with fishing and contruction my DH can communicate pretty well in any language :lol

Um, funny you should mention bikes. My brother's business plan is to have the midwest's only off-road courses. :para I think you're talking about road bikes, though. :lol Yes, they can ride there. My bros and dad all do.

Smidget
10-12-2006, 11:17 PM
yeah a road bike. but if there's dirt bikes to rent, that could be FUN!!!!! we should do it!

I would love to go camping but if this is going to be a family thing I may have to bow out. :cry
With work going the way it is for Jeff, we can't afford to fly 9 of us + cost of camping for just a weekend. I don't work and Jeff can't afford to take the time off to drive up there and back. KWIM?

I really want to meet you all, can I opt not to bring family? But if I do that, then I will fell guilty that everyone's family is there and my family is home.
Oh, I don't know, just let me know what ya'll decide and I'll figure something out.

Smidget
10-13-2006, 03:19 PM
hey FB, you can definately decide not to bring family! just like if it were just for moms, i could still bring my girls if i needed to...we'd LOVE to see ya there! i dunno if there'll be room, but you could always drive up with me and wendy! :woot

We probably wouldn't be able to go because hopefully in Jan or Feb we will be going to New Zealand and that's pretty much gonna break us ;) Of course I could probably manage going to Vegas ;)

Black Hills would be awesome!

There's gold in them there hills!!! :cowdance

Usually Bill can't get off work anymore than what he needs to for racing/carshows. But I can bring the kids. Or not. Whichever. Mine are pretty decent babysitters for little ones while people are showering etc. They will expect to be paid though...:teehee

Wherever we end up and whatever we do....I call bunking with Chaser and TEF! Called it!!! :wave

(yeah, your right Chase, I'm the most immature, so being sofa king old doesn't matter much :D

You guys, I don't know if I'm going to be able to do this. Everything I find says it's going to cost about $500/ticket.:( If I take the girls (which I would really want to do if everyone else is taking their kids camping), that's $1500 in travel alone, and I can't even afford to get my AD's again.:(

Vegas would only be about $300 for me, and I definitely wouldn't take the girls to that.:para

Ring :( I want you to be able to come. I guess maybe we could take another vote? I'm sure Vegas could still be doable for many, but it seems like some want to bring their kids and some don't. It would be easier to be kid-free in WI than to bring kids to Vegas. :shrug I don't know what to say. My head hurts from trying to figure all this out. Let's do another vote.
