Mine wore preemie for the first couple of weeks even though they weren't preemie. They wore Newborn for the next month probably and then finally the 0-3 months fit. After that their age pretty much matched the clothing. Have fun shopping!

My girls started in 0-3 and they did swim in thier clothes :lol It didn't take long, maybe a month for them to fit in them to the point where they looked cute, though :)
I personally would go with newborn size, then 3 months.....onsies are a necessity, too :)

Onsies, you can NEVER have enough Onsies. Mine swam in newborn clothes for about a month, I bought a couple of preemie outfits for when we were going out, because people tend to stop you when you have twins/triplets/etc. so I wanted them to have a couple of things that actually fit. (Plus they make great doll clothes later on.) Just keep in mind the seasons, too. I had a crapload of 3-6 month old clothes they couldn't wear because it was too warm out for long sleeves, and then a crapload of 6-9 month old summery outfits they couldn't wear because it was too cold.
And you need more onsies. If you think you have enough? You need more.

Mine wore preemie outfits for 6 weeks, I also had a bunch of gowns that are supposed to be huge. Start looking on eBay, thats how I started.
Will you dress them in identical outfits?
Its really hard to say what to get. Mine were born in September and I planned on them having plenty of summer clothes, and our spring here has been chilly so they're wearing a lot of coveralls and onesies.
If you're having girls, I may have a TON of stuff to sell and give you :para

Onesies and gowns is what my girls wore for 2-3 months, unless we were going out (which was only to dr's appts:lol ). They had a few newborn things, mostly 0-3mth things, and no preemie things. I figured I would have my mom run out to buy preemie clothes when we were in the hospital (if they came early). If they are going to fit in preemie clothes, chances are they will be in the NICU for a bit, so you will have time to buy them. Gowns are great because there is no snapping for diapering (which is OFTEN) and you don't have to worry about them sticking two legs down one leg hole. I just rolled up their sleeves while they were awake, and down while they were sleeping (this also took the place of mits so they didn't scratch their faces). When we went out, it was usually cute Carter's sleepers. I don't think they wore much else for the first 3 months, and I had bought a lot. For the first 9 months of their lives, I had a TON of unworn clothes.:blush
IMHO, the most crucial clothes to buy are onesies. Carter's fit a bit smaller and slimmer and Gerber fits a bit bigger...I liked these when they got bigger to make room for their bellies.:lol2 Carter's sells the cutest and most durable gowns.
Try not to go too crazy on clothes yet. you might end up with the wrong season and lots of unworn clothes...like me.:lol

mine were premies also, and wore thoes for a while. there a 13 months now and can still where 6-9 months.
Mine were in preemie sizes for a few weeks, but since my boys were long and thin (19 inches and 5lb) the preemie stuff was too short and 0-3 was too big. It sucked. I think they were about 6 weeks when I gave up on the preemie sizes and put them all in 0-3, then they were in 3-6 at Christmas so around 4 months old or so. Onesies are definitely your biggest need early on. That was pretty much all mine wore, onesies and gowns. And socks.
Oh and my boys were 34 weekers. Really I would say buy some 0-3, don't buy any preemie stuff yet, you can always pick some up later and you may not need it if you go to term. My neighbor had her girls at 35 weeks and they never needed preemie sizes. Don't go overboard on the really small sizes. I'd say 20 onesies in a 0-3 would be plenty.

My kids wore preemie clothes. DS wore them for about 6 weeks and DD was in preemie clothes till she was almost 3 months old :lol2
My kids are average size now, but they were 33 weekers and 5 lbs1oz (18") and 4lbs1oz (16.5")
